Even more concept work.

I've been doing lots and lots of drawing this summer, my sketchbook is nearly full up, ideas of illustrations in the back of my head, thinking a lot about how to word my thesis proposal, and of course warming up with some concept art. It's good and bad: Good because I'm getting a lot of my portfolio for concept art done before thesis begins, Bad because I really need to finish up the illustrations I've been working on.

The above two designs are the result of a process I've been thinking of for a while, I finally jumped forward with the idea and I think the experiment sort of worked. Being so conflicted with how I want to work it's finally nice to have some things finally coming out of the woodwork. The technique involves lots of scribbling, lots of masking, and lots of editing; I'm still trying to master it. Likewise, I've been really figuring things out with the directions I want my illustration to go, both conceptually (which I might add that I am really excited about) and technically.

It's nice to finally have some vehicles in the old portfolio.

I'm not one for having all of my work be of the same thing, so I thought it would be a nice contrast from the mechanical vehicles to some fantasy environments. Now all I need to do is some lifestyle illustrations to balance it out. The above two are at a level of finish that I think is presentable, but I'd like to keep working on them. It may not be for a while, so here they are before I forget.

  1. I think have work that shows a sense of scale and verity is a great thing to include in your portfolio. Also having a good number of environmental (which I think is something your are outstanding at) is also a great thing to have in your portfolio (The industry LOVES those environmental guys mainly because it requires so much more than just knowing how to illustrate) and you have a great sense of scale and shape.

You are going to do great things (which you are already doing) and create more outstanding work.

  2. I'm really loving those two compositions dude. They have a nice sense of implied volume. I can see how they'd look as 3d rendered environments.

  3. Thanks Brandon, That's great to hear as I always fear that the practicality in my concept art is sometimes lost.
